Lisbon Airport is close — but choose the transfer for your luggage
Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) sits unusually close to central Lisbon. The airport authority currently describes the centre as roughly a 20-minute trip away in favourable conditions, which is why Metro, taxi and app-based rides are all realistic rather than "airport transfer day" logistics.
The most important correction to older Lisbon guides is this: do not plan around the old dedicated Aerobus advice. Lisbon Airport's current public-transport page points travellers to Metro and regular buses, plus taxis and online reservation platforms. If a third-party shuttle is important to you, verify that exact operator before travel rather than assuming a historic Aerobus route still runs.
Metro: best default for light luggage
The airport station is on the Red Line. Lisbon Airport currently describes Aeroporto–Saldanha as about 20 minutes; for Baixa, Chiado or Cais do Sodré you will normally change lines. I would use the Metro when I had manageable luggage, arrived during operating hours and was staying near a station rather than halfway up an Alfama staircase.
Metro Lisboa's 2026 occasional fare table lists a Carris/Metro single journey at €1.90, zapping at €1.72 and contactless bank-card Metro travel at €1.92. Fares can change, so Metro Lisboa is the final check.
Regular airport buses: useful, but not the same as Aerobus
Lisbon Airport currently lists regular Carris routes including 208, 705 and 744. They can make sense if one drops near your accommodation, but I would not choose a bus just because an old article says "Aerobus". Check the live route and luggage practicality before boarding.
If you are connecting onward by rail, Oriente is the useful transport hinge. The airport authority describes it as around ten minutes away by Metro; from there CP trains run to destinations across Portugal.
Taxi: simple door-to-door, especially with bags
Official taxis queue outside the terminal. Lisbon Airport's current guidance estimates roughly €10–15 to the city centre including luggage fees, depending on traffic, and advises passengers to make sure the meter is on and ask for a receipt. Treat that figure as a current guide, not a guaranteed quote for every address or traffic jam.
Uber/Bolt and other TVDE apps: use the official pickup system
Lisbon Airport says app-based passenger pickups such as Uber and Bolt use the dedicated area at P2, Level 2, arrivals. The airport also explicitly warns travellers not to contract a taxi or TVDE ride by responding to someone approaching them inside the terminal: use the official rank or the app.
App pricing can surge, so compare the live quote with the taxi option rather than assuming one is always cheaper.
Late-night or disrupted arrivals
If your flight lands near or after the Metro's operating window, or the line is disrupted, plan on an official taxi or booked/app ride. Do not build a late-night transfer around a timetable you last checked months ago. Recheck the airport and Metro status on the day.

Check the exact street, not just the neighbourhood
Lisbon's airport is easy. Lisbon's hills are the trap. A Metro stop that looks "close" can still leave you hauling a suitcase up stairs or steep cobbles. Check the final 500 metres before deciding which transfer is cheapest in practice.
