2 days in Lisbon: the essential itinerary
Just enough time for the historic centre and Belém — a tight but workable plan if two days is what you've got.
Two days is tight for Lisbon — enough for the essential centre and Belém, but no realistic room for a day trip. Treat this as a highlights run rather than a thorough visit; see our 3-day itinerary if you can stretch it, since a third day is what actually lets Sintra fit without feeling rushed.
Day 1: Historic centre & Alfama
- Morning: Start in Baixa, the grid-planned downtown, then climb (or take Tram 28 part-way) into Alfama — Lisbon's oldest district.
- Late morning: São Jorge Castle for the city's best 360° view — arrive as close to opening as you can manage.
- Afternoon: Wander down through Alfama's lanes toward the miradouros (Portas do Sol, Santa Luzia), then cross into Chiado for lunch and a look at the shopping streets.
- Evening: A fado dinner in Alfama or Bairro Alto — book ahead, see our fado guide.
Day 2: Belém & the riverside
- Morning: Take the tram to Belém — do Jerónimos Monastery first (book ahead), then Belém Tower along the riverside path.
- Midday: Pastel de nata at the original bakery, then a slower riverside lunch.
- Afternoon: LX Factory on the way back into town for shops, street art and a coffee.
- Evening: A last miradouro at sunset — Miradouro da Senhora do Monte or São Pedro de Alcântara both work well — then dinner in Bairro Alto or Príncipe Real.
If you have to cut something
Drop LX Factory before you drop Belém's monuments, and drop a second miradouro before you drop the first — the castle view and Jerónimos are the two hardest things to feel you've "done Lisbon" without.
Frequently asked questions
- Is 2 days enough for Lisbon?
- It covers the essential centre, Alfama and Belém, but doesn't leave room for a day trip to Sintra — 3 days is more comfortable if that matters to you.
- What should I prioritise in 2 days in Lisbon?
- São Jorge Castle and Alfama on day one, Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower on day two — the four sights most visitors regret skipping.
- Can I fit Sintra into a 2-day Lisbon trip?
- Not comfortably alongside the city centre and Belém. If Sintra matters more than a full look at Belém, swap it in for day two instead.
