What LX Factory is — and what it is not

LX Factory is a reused industrial complex at Rua Rodrigues de Faria 103 in Alcântara, beneath the 25 de Abril Bridge. Former factory buildings now hold restaurants, bars, shops, studios, offices and event spaces. It is not a museum with one ticket or fixed opening time: the site is a working mixed-use complex, so individual businesses keep their own schedules.

The appeal is the combination rather than one “must-see” object. You can browse independent design shops, look at murals, stop for coffee, visit Ler Devagar, eat, then walk back into the wider Alcântara neighbourhood. Entry to the common complex is free; you pay only for whatever you buy, eat, drink or book.

Sunday LX Market

Sunday is the high-energy version of LX Factory. Visit Lisboa's current LX Market information lists a recurring Sunday market with handmade and vintage goods, and its current events calendar shows Sunday dates continuing through 2026 and into 2027. Market hours can vary by component and season, so treat the day as dependable but verify the current time if the market is the main reason for your trip.

Sunny Sundays get busy. Arrive earlier if you want to browse stalls and photograph the industrial spaces; come later if you prefer atmosphere, food and drinks. If crowds annoy you, choose a weekday instead — the permanent shops/restaurants are the point then, not the market.

What to do once you arrive

Ler Devagar is the best-known interior: a bookshop inside a former printing space, visually dramatic even if you are not shopping for Portuguese books. Street art changes over time, which is a reason to wander rather than follow an old mural checklist. Independent retail and food venues also turn over; use the current directory/signage once there rather than building the visit around a decade-old “top ten”.

For food, the strength is choice. LX Factory works well for a casual lunch or an unhurried evening because everyone in a group can find something without leaving the complex. Getting there without the old transport mistake

Train: CP's Cascais line serves Alcântara-Mar. From the station it is a short walk inland to LX Factory. This is often the simplest option from Cais do Sodré and also makes it easy to continue west toward Belém.

Bus/tram: CARRIS services run along the western river corridor and through Alcântara. Use the live journey planner because works and service changes can make a memorised route number less useful than current directions. Taxi/rideshare: practical for groups, luggage or anyone avoiding the awkward crossings around the rail/road infrastructure.

Combine it with Belém — but in the right order

LX Factory lies between central Lisbon and Belém, so pairing them is logical. The best order depends on timed monument tickets. If Jerónimos has a fixed slot, build around that. Otherwise, an earlier LX Factory visit followed by Belém keeps you moving west without backtracking. On Sunday, reverse the order if you specifically want the LX Market at its liveliest.

How long do you need?

One hour: quick walk, Ler Devagar and a coffee. Two to three hours: realistic first visit with browsing and a meal. Half a day: justified on Sunday market day or if you add Museu da Carris and the Alcântara waterfront. It does not need a full day by itself.

Accessibility and comfort

The surrounding district is relatively flat by Lisbon standards, but the industrial complex is old and individual businesses occupy buildings with different layouts. Expect uneven surfaces and possible stairs. If you need step-free access to a specific restaurant, shop or event space, verify that venue directly rather than assuming the whole factory shares one standard.
