What fado actually is
Fado is a genre of melancholic, deeply expressive Portuguese song, traditionally accompanied by the Portuguese guitarra (a pear-shaped 12-string instrument) and a classical guitar. Its central emotional idea is "saudade" — a specifically Portuguese sense of longing or bittersweet nostalgia that doesn't translate cleanly into English. UNESCO recognised fado as part of humanity's Intangible Cultural Heritage, reflecting how central it is to Lisbon's identity specifically — the genre is strongly associated with the city, particularly Alfama and Mouraria.

Fado exists on a spectrum from genuinely intimate, unamplified performances in small family-run casas de fado, to large tourist-oriented dinner shows with fixed menus and coach-tour crowds. Neither is inherently "fake," but they're different experiences at different price points. Alfama and Mouraria hold the highest concentration of long-running, locally respected venues; Bairro Alto has its own smaller scene mixed in among the bars.
