What the Lisboa Card is in 2026
The Lisboa Card is a physical magnetic tourist card sold for 24, 48 or 72 consecutive hours. Visit Lisboa currently advertises free public transport, free admission to more than 50 museums and monuments, and dozens of discounts and offers. It is not a digital pass you simply leave in your phone wallet.
If you buy online, you receive a voucher and still need to redeem it for the physical card at an Ask Me Lisboa tourism desk. The current instructions say the card activates with first use/validation and then runs for consecutive hours, so do not validate it the night before your museum day just to save one Metro fare.
What transport is included?
Current official card material includes buses, trams, Metro and trains, including routes to Sintra, Cascais and Setúbal. Visit Lisboa's FAQ specifically says public boats are not included, so a Cacilhas ferry day needs separate planning.
The attraction list can change — check it before buying
Visit Lisboa currently advertises free access to 51 museums and monuments, but individual venues can close for works or change how card holders enter. The official list currently flags the National Tile Museum as closed for renovations. If one attraction is what makes your maths work, verify that attraction before buying.
Two headline Belém sights need extra planning: current Lisboa Card instructions say Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower require date/time reservations. Redeem the voucher for the physical card first because its number is used for the reservation, and access remains subject to the capacity available to Lisboa Card holders.
Is it worth it? Do the maths on your actual itinerary
I would not buy the card because a travel blog says "it saves 40%". Price the day you are genuinely going to have. Add the current standard prices of the included sights you will actually enter, then add the transport you would otherwise buy. Compare that with the official current Lisboa Card price for the same duration.

The transport-only alternative: navegante occasional
If the attraction maths does not work, use Lisbon's ordinary transport products. Metro Lisboa's current 2026 occasional fares list:
- Carris/Metro single: €1.90
- Zapping Metro journey: €1.72
- Contactless bank card on Metro: €1.92
- 24-hour Carris/Metro: €7.25
- 24-hour Carris/Metro/CP: €11.40
- navegante occasional card: €0.50
Those figures are effective from 1 January 2026 and can change later, so use Metro Lisboa's current tariff as the final check. Older guides often use "Viva Viagem" as a catch-all name; for current planning, look for navegante products and current operator instructions.
How not to waste the validity window
- Decide which museum/monument day is dense enough to justify the card.
- Redeem the online voucher for the physical card before any reservation that needs its card number.
- Book Jerónimos/Belém Tower slots if they remain part of your plan and current instructions still require them.
- Activate the card when you are ready to start the consecutive 24/48/72-hour window.
- Keep it accessible for transport validation and participating attractions.
Uber, Bolt and taxis are a separate decision
The Lisboa Card is not an argument against taking a taxi when hills, luggage or a late night make one sensible. Use transport inclusion intelligently; do not force an exhausted group through three connections just because the pass covers them.
Value test in one sentence
If the current admissions you would buy anyway plus the transport you would buy anyway exceed the current card price, consider it. If you need to add attractions just to make the arithmetic work, the card is planning your holiday instead of helping it.
